Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton
10/10
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book! I went in with very little expectation or even knowledge of what the story would be about. All I knew is it was a science fiction story. If you know me, you know I LOVE a good science fiction novel. I devoured this book. The concept of being able to create a clone and the questions that arise when it comes to ethics and morality. Let alone the fact that you can never really "die". Mickey, the main character, has signed up to be an expendable on this space exploration mission. The mission is to cultivate a new planet and get it ready for people to live there. But what does being an expendable mean?
It means that you get all the risky and dangerous work. If there is a high chance at someone dying or being seriously injured from a job, it automatically is given to Mickey. Since if he dies, he immediately comes back, even if it is as a clone. So literally dying cannot get him out of the job. He is now the 7th clone of himself when we start the novel. He falls down a rocky cavern and is deemed dead. What happens when he doesn't die but instead comes back to the base to find Mickey 8?
This novel is full of twists and turns. While it ends leaving you fully satisfied there will be a book 2! It comes out in March of 2023. In addition, Mickey 7 is being turned into a movie by Bong Joon Ho coming 2024! If you want to learn more about the development of the novel you can listen to my podcast where I had the pleasure of interviewing the author, Edward Ashton.
