Sometimes you only have a single day to visit somewhere. Whether you're just driving through, trying to visit as many places as possible in a trip, or you're just doing a day trip. This is the first in a series of blog posts where I will be visiting somewhere for a single day. Each post will showcase the places I went to, where I ate, what I drank, and more. Each one will be different, even if I have already done a post for a city. Even if you think you've done everything, seen everything, been everywhere, there are bound to be more places you haven't heard of yet. Heck, you might even be local to the city I visit and not know about a place!
Let's jump right in! Today, or more accurately last Sunday, I went to San Diego for the day. Well, if I'm being honest, half a day. I left my house at 1pm and arrived around 2:30pm as I live in Orange County. Surprisingly traffic was almost nonexistent!
Stop 1 - Double Tree Mission Valley
I stayed here a couple weeks ago and left a bag, so I had to pick it up. But that bag is the reason I spend the day in San Diego, so I'm not too upset about it.
Stop 2 - Comic's N Stuff
It's a comic book and collectibles store at the Mission Valley Mall that is quite large. If you like collecting things - Funko pops, figures, trading cards, key chains, and more, or like comics - this is a place for you!
Stop 3 - Comic Con Museum
I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting to. I had never been, nor was it really on my list of places to visit. Then someone asked if I had gone and if I would recommend it. So naturally, I had to go! It is hands down worth it. The exhibit they had while I was there was called POPnology. It was fascinating, especially to see how technology has progressed over time, and who predicted it through fiction in history. If you have not been before, I highly recommend it. Even if you have been, they change the exhibit fairly often so you should go again.
Stop 4 & 5 - Craft & Commerce + False Idol.
Inside Craft & Commerce there is a speakeasy called False Idol, it's Tiki themed and when I say the drinks were amazing, I mean the drinks were AMAZING. I was only planning on getting one drink as I wanted to visit several speakeasies, but after the first sip, and looking over their menu, I knew I needed a second one. My first drink was called the Coronado Luau Special which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then I ordered the second drink, and it blew the first one out of the water. My second drink was called Ube Bae. It had things I've never had in a cocktail before - taro and ube. It also used a house made toasted rice simple syrup. While on the sweeter side, it did not feel overly sweet, and the flavors melded together perfectly.
Craft & Commerce is a restaurant and bar with phenomenal food and great drinks. It's also host to the above-mentioned False Idol. After having two drinks there I decided I needed to get some food and man am I glad I did. While at False Idol a friend messaged me and recommended I order the Brussel sprouts & the short rib French onion dipI was planning on getting the short rib sandwich until I saw they had duck confit tacos with bone marrow... can you blame me? So that's what I ordered to eat. I also ordered a drink called Talk Talk Talk, which kept in theme with tiki drinks. I loved the spices in it. While the drink was great, and paired nicely with the tacos, I would go back here just for the tacos.
Stop 6 - Mothership
While at False Idol, the person next to me at the bar recommended I check out a speakeasy called Mothership, about a 10-minute drive away. It is also a tiki bar, but the theme is a spaceship. The shortened backstory is that a spaceship crash landed onto a planet, and they opened up a tiki bar. They also have food items, all of which are vegetarian. I ordered the Potatoes which had a Kimchi cream cheese base, and they were delightful. To drink I ordered a Wormhole. It was pretty good but not quite as good as False Idol in my opinion. That being said I will definitely be back, and next time I want to try more than just one cocktail as they have several on their menu that look amazing.
Stop 7 - Extraordinary Desserts
My last stop for the evening was a restaurant all for desserts. I was only planning on getting a cookie to go as I wanted to stop by one more speakeasy. Instead, I ordered a chocolate ganache brownie Sunday. While it was very good and I enjoyed it, the chocolate ganache was too rich for me so I only ate 1/4 of the ganache. I did finish the ice cream though.
And that's a wrap!
What's really funny is out of the four drink and food places I went to, none of them were the ones I was originally planning to visit. All that means is I have to go back and do another day in San Diego.
